Balance and Fall Prevention

.

Falls among older adults is a health concern that is growing because of the rapid aging of the United States population.

How serious is the problem?

  • More than one-third of adults ages 65 years and older fall each year.

  • Among older adults, falls are the leading cause of injury deaths and the most common cause of nonfatal injuries and hospital admissions for trauma.

  • In 2003, nearly 13,700 people ages 65 and older died from fall-related injuries and more than 60% of people who die from falls are 75 and older.

  • Among people ages 75 years and older, those who fall are four to five times more likely to be admitted to a long-term care facility for a year or longer.

  • 25% of elderly persons who sustain a hip fracture die within 1 year.

  • In 2000, direct medical costs totaled $179 million dollars for fatal and $19.3 billion dollars for nonfatal fall injuries.

Stopping the Downhill Spiral through Customized Balance Rehabilitation

Downhill spiral reversed by EPT therapy

Because there is strong research to support that intervention customized to an individuals’ specific impairment(s) is more effective than generic exercise programs, England Physical Therapy tailors the rehabilitation to the patient’s specific findings to optimize outcomes.

Our Balance Therapy Program is recognized as one of the most successful for the treatment of imbalance.  Treatment is customized, provided 1:1 with a licensed physical therapist and promotes safety, effective gait and reduced falls.  Our unique balance equipment includes both Over-Ground and Over-Treadmill Body Weight Support Systems which gives our facility an added edge to take on more challenging cases safely for both the patient and therapist.

Before balance treatment at EPT patients say:

ž  “I sit at the side of the bed for awhile before I’m ready to stand.”

  ž “I move slow; I’m cautious.”

  ž “I don’t fall anymore because I’m careful.”

It’s normal to lose your balance; it’s not normal not to be able to catch your balance.

Teresa England, PT, MPT

Often, persons with imbalance become slow and cautious about movements—understandably, they want to avoid “losing their balance.”  Unfortunately, they lose the skill of recovering balance.

After balance treatment at EPT patients say:

J “I don’t lose my balance as often, and when I do, I can catch it.”
